"FATAL: Module ip_tables not found.":

Seems to be caused by a change in kernel dependencies in the iptables package.

Some people report changing the kernel modules fixes it, and I know downgrading from iptables-1.3.7 to 1.3.6 (versioning may be gentoo-specific, no idea) fixes it.
