Goulash

Goulash is a spicy Hungarian dish (gulyás), somewhere between soup and stew.

There seem to be a lot more more imitations than recipes for the Hungarian dish, but that's how it goes with anything that becomes more widely known.

Many are a little simpler, so the following is rough:

Basic ingredients:

• Beef
• Onions
• Paprika powder
• Hot peppers - usually. The original dish is spicy, but not all variations are.

Common additions and flavouring:

• Bay laurel
• Bell peppers
• Tomato
• Garlic
• Cayenne
• Chives

Can be served with:

• Potatoes (cooked or mashed)
• Rice
• Pasta
• Polenta
• Dumplings
• Spatzle
