A clitic is an (unstressed) element (word, morpheme) that has some properties (often syntactic ones, like function) of an independent word but also some of a bound morpheme (usually phonetically).
They differ from affixes, partly in that they may appear an act act more flexibly in terms of morphology, syntax and grammar.
Examples include English contracted verbs as in "they'll" and "she's"(verify)
