===Multivibrators===

There are three basic types of multivibrator - though many implementation variants with their own behaviour

* astable multivibrator, a.k.a. free-running multivibrator
: two unstable states, in that it is unable to find rest in either state
: uses: blinker, oscillator

* monostable (one-shot)
: one state is stable, the other is not
: meaning that once triggered it will switch back and forth and rest again
: uses: timer, pulse strether (also useful in PWM), measuring resistance (without an ADC) by measuring ''when'' the flop back happens

* and bistable (flip-flop)
: both states are stable  
: meaning that a trigger will change its state, and rest there (like a schmitt trigger, or can be one)
: uses: switch, divide-by-two (watch the state of one of the transistors)


Astable can be an oscillator in itself, the other two can also be useful as ''controlled'' things.
