The kx project provides an independent set of windows drivers for many Sound Blaster cards released around the 2000s (EMU10K1 and EMU10K2 based; full list here)
Some of the more pressing questions
Why don't I hear anything?
Probably because front and rear are still switched. The rear port is capable of slightly better quality so is more interesting to use for front audio.
There are also some cards where this doesn't seem to work.
Why do I suddenly have four sound cards listed?
Because:
- 0/1 is mixed to surround
- 4/5 is directed to front left and front right, respectively (useful for players/games that do their own surround)
- 6/7 is directed to rear left and front right, respectively
- 8/9 is directed to center and subwoofer (respectively)
