LibraryThing

See:

JSON Works API

Some resemblance to Google's Dynamic Links (previously viewability API) and OpenLibrary's Books API, but more for information+linking than for preview+linking.

JSON Books API

Needs key.

OpenLibrary

This article/section is a stub — probably a pile of half-sorted notes, is not well-checked so may have incorrect bits. (Feel free to ignore, fix, or tell me)

Identifiers it supports:

  • olid - OpenLibrary's identifiers look like OL7440033M, OL10221388W, and so.
    • The last letter is:
      • W for works (linked under /works/)
      • M for editions (linked under /b/)
      • A for author (linked under /a/)
  • isbn - in ISN10 or ISBN13 form
  • lccn
  • oclc
  • id - internal id, used in some places. You probably don't care about this much.

Books

Mostly (but not entirely) the same interface as Google's Dynamic Links API[1] (previously known as the viewability API) uses, as OL imitates that Google API.

OCLC and Worldcat related

This article/section is a stub — probably a pile of half-sorted notes, is not well-checked so may have incorrect bits. (Feel free to ignore, fix, or tell me)

WorldCat is intended to be a global bibliographic union catalogue, of libraries that participate in OCLC (Online Computer Library Center).

Worldcat Search API

Requires web service key.

Record search, OpenSearch:

  • start
    offset (default 1) and
    amount
    (default 10, max 50(verify))

Record search, SRU:

  • CQL query (via URL)
  • Records as MARC XML or DC XML
  • similar start/amount thing
  • sortability by relevance, title, author, date, library count, score, or OCLCnum.

Holdings information (geographically sorted), per record JSON?

Formatted citations

  • (APA, Chicago, Harvard, MLA, and Turabian)

Worldcat Basic API

Dumbed down version of Worldcat Search API that iis free for noncommercial use (still needs a freqq-to-request web service key)

(OpenSearch, 1000 queries/day max, returns Atom or RSS, limited data)

Seems targeted to mashups.
