Passing things or communication without having to meet personally - also meaning that if one is tracked, that does not implicate the other as another potential person of interest.
Electronic dead drops are typically short bursts of often-short-range tranmissions (both to be harder to pinpoint or monitor, but also because portable devices had limited range), where the other party knows when and where to listen.
