em and en refer to width, specifically to the width of the letter m and n in the respective typeface.

ex refers to the height of an x.

LaTeX has em and ex as units of size.

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets, used on the web) does too, but its em is defined based on the current font size, specifically its height. This makes CSS's ex somewhat redundant in practice.
